Gloomy Bear Pattern (Version 1)

Gloomy Bear Crochet Pattern - Version 1

Printer-Friendly PDF

FINISHED SIZE: approx. 12 inches tall

Gloomy Bear is a character originally designed by Mori Chack.

From Wikipedia:

"Gloomy, an abandoned little bear, is rescued by Pitty (the little boy). At first, he is cute and cuddly, but becomes more wild as he grows up. Since bears do not become attached to people like dogs by nature, Gloomy attacks Pitty even though he is the owner."
- Cube Works press release

NOTE: I originally intended to make the version with blood on it, but I forgot to use red (or maybe I didn't have red then?) when I was making the claws. Since I thought others would want the pattern available sooner rather than later, and since I'm still not sure whether I'm happy or not with how this one turned out, I decided to make two versions. One with blood and one without. This is the one without blood on it.

Some of the parts may look a little wonky while you're making them, but it's okay - you aren't doing anything wrong to make that happen.

Materials:

- Lion Brand Vanna's Choice; *"Pink Poodle" or any pink yarn (2-3 skeins), "Black" (less than one skein), "White" (less than one skein)
- size F/5 (3.75mm) crochet hook
- stuffing
- yarn needle

*NOTE: I used Vanna's Choice "Pink Poodle" because I already had some on hand from the last pattern I made and I didn't think I would have to buy more for the project (haha - silly me). But if I were to do it again, I'd pick a pink closer to that of the original gloomy bear. Or, better yet, go for some Red Heart Super Saver - then you will probably only need 1 skein.

 Instructions:

Notes/Tips: You will want to use "place markers" (scraps of yarn to mark where rounds end and begin) when making most of the parts in this pattern. I almost never do, but this pattern almost demands them. I say "almost" because I worked it without them (I hate using them)... which means there may be some errors. Be vigilant!

ASSEMBLY:

You may want to Google some images of "Gloomy Bear" for reference when sewing parts into place.

Decide which side of the head you want to be the front and sew the muzzle in place.
Sew the nose to the top of the muzzle.
Sew the eyes in place.
Sew the ears in place.
Stuff arms somewhat lightly but firmly, leaving a small space at the top.
Now insert three of the claws into the arm and sew the arm shut with the claws trapped inside the arm. Be careful to make sure your stitches go through the claws to hold them firmly in place.
Sew the arms to the body (remember to orient which direction you want your Gloomy's claws facing).
Before you sew the legs onto the body, decide whether you want your Gloomy Bear in a sitting pose or a standing pose. Stuff and sew the legs in place accordingly. You may want to add more stuffing before you finish sewing each of them to the body.
Sew tail to bear's body.

And you're done!
Enjoy!

I am sorry I do not have photos of the finished Version 2.

ASSEMBLY:
Stuff nose lightly. (Tip: I wait to add stuffing until the nose is *almost* completely sewn to the face/head, but there is still an opening to put the stuffing in. This makes it so the stuffing isn't "in the way" while you are sewing the nose in place.)
Sew nose to one of the head pieces and embroider a mouth and eyes, using photo for reference.
Stuff and sew head pieces together.
Sew patch to body, using the photo as a guide. With Poodle Pink yarn, embroider 3 french knots on the triangle. With red yarn, embroider red "stitches" so that they appear to be (aesthetically) holding the patch in place.
Sew head to body.
Sew ears to sides of head with pointier ends facing up and bulkier ends facing down. Use photo for reference.
Sew arms to sides of body, using the photo as a guide.
Sew legs to body, using the photo as a guide.
Tie (or sew) a hot pink bow around the neck. (I did not add the pink bow/ribbon because I do not have that particular supply/material available! Remember to feel free to improvise with materials. For example, if you don't have purple yarn or don't want to buy it, try sewing on a patch of scrap fabric instead.)

4/16/13 (Update): I found a hot pink ribbon, so I took an updated photo. =)

Enjoy!

Why I post patterns for free

I have been getting a lot of people telling me (offline) that I should not post my patterns for free - that I should charge for them. I admit, it would help. I do not have a job and don't have any prospects for one at all at this time. But it makes me sad to be told I should not post any of them for free.

I may end up selling patterns someday, but I started posting patterns for free because I remember when I was first starting out, there would be really cute patterns for sale that I would buy and THEN find out that I didn't have the skill needed to complete it (because obviously, you aren't allowed to read over the pattern before you buy it). Or even worse, have you ever purchased a pattern where no matter how closely you follow the instructions, it never turns out like the photos that hooked you into buying it? I hate that (and I always hope that my patterns don't do that, but if they do, at least they were free). And being currently unemployed, I can certainly understand the frustration that is this: If you didn't buy the pattern, you could have bought yarn instead! Or, you can only buy one; yarn or the pattern. Now, choose which one... *jeopardy music starts playing*

And then there is another reason. I don't want to have to be Ferengi-like at all times. It seems like so much of the world has gotten to be that way. It's like you can't do anything without being charged. And I have to say I still believe in Gene Roddenberry's vision of humanity, even though every time I leave home, I am disheartened by the way other people treat one another. I think people are like that because of the way things are - things are hard and cash is needed for everything, and God forbid you (or a loved one, or both) should have anything medical going on or you won't even be able to afford to eat. :(

So, I enjoy creating patterns that are available (and I hope, desirable) for everyone because... it's just the Starfleet way. I delude myself into thinking that Gene Roddenberry would be proud of my miniscule little efforts. It's not like free patterns will feed you, but ideally they can make life more enjoyable at times when you need or want something to do for fun, to create something with your own hands. And I guess, other than offering free patterns, it's not like there's a lot else I can do to change the world or make it so that the human race functions happier and healthier.

Speaking of free patterns, I am currently working on the next one. It is based on a plushie I won from one of those claw machines. I looked up a how-to online and tried and won 4 prizes! (But first I had to find a machine like the ones described in the how-to - the "large claws" and the newer machines are pretty darned near impossible to win at, according to what I heard. I believe it.)

It was the fulfillment of a childhood dream - I was never allowed to play one as a child, since it really is "wasting money." But, when it comes to gambling, there are much worse (and much scarier) ways to waste money. So, I don't feel so bad about playing the claw machine. (And if anyone reading this wants to try the claw machine, too, I just have one piece of advice - there are times when absolutely nothing in the machine is "get-able" because they are all packed in too tightly or, if too close to the glass sides, the claw can't reach them.)

Here is a photo of the claw-prize-plushie that the new free pattern will be based on:
