Recycled Silk Bag

Materials:
1 ball recycled silk yarn
1 ball black cotton yarn that I had lying around ("Patons: Grace" would be a good substitute)
size 9 knitting needles

Pattern:

This pattern uses seed stitch throughout.

With both strands held together, cast on 25 sts.

Rows 1-6: *(K1, P1), repeat from * across.

Row 7: Work in seed stitch for 8 sts, cast off 9 sts in seed st, work in seed stitch to end of row (there should be 8 sts on each side of cast off sts).

Row 8: Work in seed stitch for 8 sts, cast on 9 sts, work in seed stitch to end of row (25 sts).

Continue working in seed stitch until piece measures approx. 11 inches or until yarn is getting somewhat close to getting used up.

Repeat Rows 7-8.

Repeat Rows 1-6.

Cast off in seed st.

Weave in ends and sew sides together.

Sturdy Little Trinket Pouch

Materials:

size F and G crochet hooks
2 skeins sock yarn (2 full skeins are not needed, but two strands are used throughout the pattern)
beads (optional)

Pattern:

Use size G hook.
Round 1: Starting with a magic ring, sc 6 sts into ring.
Round 2: 2 sc in ea st around (12 sts).
Round 3: *(Sc in next st, 2 sc in next st), repeat from * around (18 sts).
Round 4: Sc in next st, *(2 sc in next st, sc in ea of next 2 sts), repeat from * to last st, sc last st (24 sts).
Round 5: *(2 sc in next st, sc in ea of next 5 sts), repeat from * around (28 sts).
Round 6: Sc in ea st around.
Round 7: *(Sc in st beneath next st, sc in next st), repeat from * around.
Rounds 8-10: Hdc in ea st around.
Rounds 11-14: Dc in ea st around.

To make the cord, you can either crochet a length of chain with the size F hook, or use this type of technique, if you prefer: Twisted Cord. Add beads to finished cord, if desired.

I made this bag to hold heavier trinkets, like pyrite chunks, or like this ball of iron that was given to me by someone very close to me.

2 balls wool/acrlyic mix (I used something called "Plassard: Rhapsodie," which is composed of 72% merino wool and 28% acrylic, about 50g per skein. However, an easier-to-find substitution might include "Lion Brand: Landscapes.")
safety eyes (or black yarn)

PATTERN:

Body:
Ch 16.
Round 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, working on opposite side of ch sc across (30 sts).
Round 2: Place marker. Sc in beginning sc and in each sc across.
Repeat round 2 until piece resembles a square shape.
Stuff.
Sc across the top of the piece (15 sts). Do not fasten off or cut yarn. Ch 1, turn.

Head:
Round 1: Working through back loops only, sc in ea st across, then working through unworked front loops sc in ea st across (30 sts).
Round 2: Place marker. Sc in beginning sc and in each of next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc, *(sc in each of next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc) repeat from * to last 2 sts, sc in ea of last 2 sts. (37 sts).

Fasten off and cut yarn, leaving a tail long enough to sew leg in place on bear's body.
Stuff legs lightly and sew to bear's body.

Ears (make 2):
Ch 8.
Row 1: Hdc in 3rd ch from hook and in ea ch across (6 sts).
Row 2: Ch 1, turn. Hdc in ea st across (6 sts).
Row 3: Ch 1, turn. Skip first st, hdc in ea st across (5 sts).
Row 4: Repeat row 3 (4 sts).
Row 5: Repeat row 3 (3 sts). Do not turn. Sc down the side of the ear.
Fasten off and cut yarn, leaving a tail long enough to sew the ear to the head.

Muzzle:
Round 1: Ch 2. 10 hdc in first ch.
Round 2: 2 sc in ea hdc around (20 sts). Sl st in next st.
Fasten off and cut yarn, leaving a tail long enough to sew the muzzle to the head.
Sew muzzle to bear's head.

After assembling my bear, I threw it in the wash on a hot/cold cycle, to see if it would felt or not, since I originally started this project as an experiment in felting. I've included before and after photos of the finished bear, so you can decide which look you like the best.

Textured Table Rug

Textured Table Rug

Materials:
size F crochet hook
2 skeins sock yarn

Note: I intended to make a very long table runner to drape over the sides of the table. But since my table is very small, I ended up creating a runner that was just barely too wide, so I fastened off sooner than intended. And instead of attaching the fringe to the starting ch row and final row like I had planned to do, I ended up attaching it to the sides of the piece . It's up to you how you want to make yours, but I thought I should point that out.

Pattern:
Ch 42.
Row 1: Dc in 4th ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 3, turn (counts as first dc of next row).
Row 2: Skip first st. Dc in each st across. Ch 4, turn (counts as first tr of next row).
Row 3: Skip first st. Tr in each st across. Ch 1, turn.
Row 4: Sc in each st across. Ch 1, turn.
Row 5: *(Sc in next 4 sts, sc in st beneath next st), repeat from * to last 4 sts, sc remaining sts. Ch 4, turn (counts as first tr of next row).
Row 6: Skip first st. Tr in each st across. Ch 3, turn (counts as first dc of next row).
Row 7: Skip first st. Dc in each st across. Ch 3, turn (counts as first dc of next row).
Repeat rows 2-7 until piece measures near to desired length.

An Important Note About Lion Brand Jiffy

In making an amigurumi whale recently, I made the unfortunate discovery that Lion Brand Jiffy yarn can vary in size from one skein to the next. I'd suggest keeping this in mind when selecting a crochet hook to use for this brand of yarn. (I or J seem to work best for me.)

I had to used a smaller hook size for the new whale I made because the newer Lion Brand Jiffy yarn skein I was using wasn't as bulky as the yarn from the skein I based the original pattern off of. It wasn't as soft and fluffy, either... :(

For comparison, I've taken a photo of both whales. The larger whale is the original whale I made when I first designed the pattern. The smaller one is the more recent creation.

I really am hoping that this is just a random fluke and that Lion Brand Jiffy hasn't changed the entire composition of their yarn. But, since I think all but one or two of my patterns use Jiffy yarn at this point, I felt it would be important to point this detail out.
