Sitting Kodama Amigurumi Pattern

KODAMA A.K.A. TREE SPIRIT

FINISHED SIZE: ~6 inches tall

Instead of crocheting the eyes, you may also use pieces of felt, if you choose (or if you simply don't have any black yarn available). Or, if you prefer, use 12mm black safety eyes, place them off off-kilter and/or just omit the mouth altogether.

MATERIALS:
Lion Brand Jiffy in White and Black

Size J crochet hook

stuffing

yarn needle

(Any yarn will work of course. Just remember to adjust the hook size accordingly, and that yarn weight will affect the finished size.)

EYES:

Make 2.

Using black yarn, start with a magic ring.

Ch 1, 6 sc in ring.

Sl st in first st.

Fasten off, leaving a length for sewing.

HEAD:

Using white yarn, start with a magic ring.

Ch 1, 5 sc in ring.

2 sc in ea st around. (10)

(2 sc in next st, sc in next st)around. (15)

(2 sc in next st, sc in next 2 sts)around. (20)

(2 sc in next st, sc in next 3 sts)around. (25)

(2 sc in next st, sc in next 4 sts)around. (30)

Sc in ea st around for 6 rounds.

(Sc2tog, sc in next 4 sts)around. (25)

Sc in ea st around.

(Sc2tog, sc in next 3 sts)around. (20)

(Sc2tog, sc in next 2 sts)around. (15)

At this point, add stuffing.

Continue stuffing throughout remaining rounds.

(Sc2tog, sc in next st)around. (10)

Sc2tog around. (5)

Fasten off and thread yarn through remaining sts.

BODY:

Using white yarn, start with a magic ring.

Ch 1, 5 sc in ring.

2 sc in ea st around. (10)

(2 sc in next st, sc in next st)around. (15)

(2 sc in next st, sc in next 2 sts)around. (20)

Sc in back loops only of ea st around.

Sc in ea st around for 9 rounds.

At this point, add stuffing.

Continue stuffing throughout remaining rounds.

(Sc2tog, sc in next 2 sts)around. (15)

(Sc2tog, sc in next st)around. (10)

Fasten off, leaving a length for sewing.

ARMS:

Make 2.

Using white yarn, start with a magic ring.

Ch 1, 4 sc in ring.

2 sc in ea st around. (8)

(2 sc in next st, sc in next st)around. (12)

Sc in back loops only of ea st around.

(Sc2tog, sc in next st)around. (8)

Sc in ea st around for 8 rounds.

Stuff.

Sc2tog around. (4)

Fasten off and draw yarn through remaining sts, leaving a length for sewing.

LEGS:

Make 2.

Using white yarn, start with a magic ring.

Ch 1, 5 sc in ring.

2 sc in ea st around.

Sc in back loops only of ea st around.

Sc in ea st around for 7 rounds.

Stuff.

Sc2tog around.

Fasten off and thread yarn through remaining sts.

FINISHING:

Sew the head to the body.

Sew the eyes to the head.

Embroider mouth over 1 sc space.

Sew the legs side by side to the front of the body, positioning them so that they help keep the Kodama sitting upright.

Sew the arms to the sides of the Kodama's body so that the larger "base" end faces down and helps keep the Kodama sitting upright.

Whale Amigurumi Pattern

WHALE

FINISHED SIZE: ~7 inches

MATERIALS:

Lion Brand Jiffy "Silver Heather"

small amount of black yarn for eyes (or safety eyes)

size I/9 (5.5mm) crochet hook (Crochet hook size doesn't matter as much as making sure your stitches are tight, so stuffing won't show through. So, use whatever size hook you feel works best for that purpose. I used size I.)

BODY:

Start with a magic ring.

Round 1: Ch 1. 6 sc in ring.

Round 2: 2 sc in each st around. (12)

Round 3: (Sc in next 5 sts, 2 sc in next st)twice. (14)

Round 4: (Sc in next 6 sts, 2 sc in next st)twice. (16)

Round 5: (Sc in next 7 sts, 2 sc in next st)twice. (18)
Round 6: (Sc in next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st)around. (24)

Round 7: Sc in each st around.

Round 8: (Sc in next 3 sts, 2 sc in next st)around. (30)

Round 9: Sc in each st around.

Round 10: (Sc in next 4 sts, 2 sc in next st)around. (36)

Rounds 11-24 (14 rounds): Sc in each st around.

Round 25: (Sc in next 4 sts, sc2tog)around. (30)

Round 26: Sc in each st around.

At this point, add stuffing.

Continue stuffing throughout remaining rounds.
If you are using safety eyes, remember to attach them before fastening off.

Round 27: (Sc in next 3 sts, sc2tog)around. (24)

Round 28: (Sc in next 2 sts, sc2tog)around. (18)

Round 29: (Sc in next st, sc2tog)around. (12)

Round 30: (Sc2tog)around. (6)

Fasten off and thread yarn through remaining sts.

FINS:

Make 4.

Work sc in front loops only.

Row 1: Ch 2, 3 sc in second ch from hook. Ch1, turn.

Row 2: 2 sc in first sc, sc in next sc, 2 sc in last sc. Ch 1, turn.

Row 3: 2 sc in first sc, sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in last sc. Ch 1, turn.

Row 4: 2 sc in first sc, sc in next 5 sc, 2 sc in last sc.

Fasten off.

FINISHING:

Sew 2 fins to the end to create the tail.

Sew remaining fins to body.

Embroider eyes.

NOTES (On Yarn & Hooks Used):

Crochet Hooks:

In my patterns, crochet hook size doesn't matter as much as making sure your stitches are tight, so stuffing won't show through. So use whatever size hook you feel works best for that purpose. The hook sizes I've listed in the materials for each pattern just happen to be what I used when creating that pattern. It is by no means the only "correct" size to use.

Yarn:

Use any yarn or colors you want! Experiment! Do not feel the need to stick to exactly what the pattern calls for. You might find that what you decided to use ends up turning out even better! Keep in mind also, if you use a different type of yarn, you will need to adjust the hook size accordingly. Like with crochet hook sizes, the yarn listed in the materials for each pattern is just what I used when creating the pattern. It is by no means the only "correct" type of yarn to use. =)

Stitch Abbreviations & Other Notes:

sc = single crochet

hdc = half double crochet

dc = double crochet

sl st = slip stitch

*dec1 = decrease 1

*The decreases I use in my patterns are a little different, because I feel it helps keep the stuffing from showing through the stitches when making amigurumi. However, you can use whatever method of decreasing that works best for you.

The "magic ring" may also be substituted with "ch 2, then sc (however many sc the pattern says to work inside the magic ring) in the second stitch from hook." I recommend the magic ring because it works much better for amigurumi and is easy to learn.
